Two very different risks, one Lowcountry climate. Here is how AlestaCare plans for both.

Charleston’s Climate Cuts Both Ways
As we wrap of Summer and move into Fall and towards Winter, it is just one more reminder for seasonal preparation. The Lowcountry’s mild winters are part of why so many families choose to age here. But the same coastal climate that makes Charleston appealing also brings two seasonal risks for which older adults need real preparation: dangerous summer heat and Atlantic hurricane season. AlestaCare takes both into consideration with every client’s care plan, not as an afterthought but as a standing part of how we think about safety year-round.
Summer Heat: A Risk That Builds Quietly
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly in seniors, many of whom don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. Keeping the home cool and well-ventilated, encouraging hydration throughout the day, scheduling outdoor activities for early morning or evening, and watching for confusion, dizziness, or unusual fatigue are the basics that prevent a bad afternoon from becoming an ER visit.
When the Talk About a Storm Starts
We don’t wait for a hurricane warning to bring up storm season. Once there’s real chatter in the forecast about something that could affect our area, we start the conversation with families, even while it’s still early and uncertain. At that point, it’s less about specifics and more about making sure everyone’s thinking ahead together. Is there a plan in place? Does anything need to be revisited? Has there been anything new since last discussion? We recommend that expert preparation and planning be sought such as through the City of Charleston’s “During a Hurricane” page.
Firming Up as the Picture Gets Clearer
As a storm gets closer and the forecast becomes more specific, so does the conversation. What started as ‘something’s worth keeping an eye on’ becomes a real discussion about timing, decisions, and what the days ahead are likely to look like, always in step with where the family already is in their own planning. Starting early means nobody is caught off guard scrambling in the final 48 hours. It gives everyone more room to think clearly rather than react.
How AlestaCare Helps, In Both Seasons
Our caregivers keep an eye on how a client seems to be doing during a visit, the same way any attentive person naturally would, through the heat of summer and the uncertainty of storm season alike.
And whether it’s a hot afternoon or a storm approaching, we stay in touch with families so no one we work with is left wondering what’s happening or what comes next.
