Charleston home care company implements evidence-based training to help seniors maintain independence and brain health
CHARLESTON, SC, January 20, 2026 — AlestaCare announces the appointment of Alyssa Latimer, PTA, as Clinical Advisor, marking a significant step in the company’s commitment to providing home care services and cognitive wellness solutions backed by clinical expertise and evidence-based protocols.
In her role, Alyssa will help develop the curriculum for AlestaCare clients and train the caregiving team, focusing on activities that support cognitive wellness including physical activity and mental stimulation—two factors research shows are deeply interconnected for healthy aging.
“Most home care stops at companionship and basic assistance,” said Daniel Poch, Founder and CEO of AlestaCare. “We’re building something different. Alyssa brings the clinical knowledge to ensure our caregivers aren’t just helping with daily tasks; they’re actively supporting brain health through movement, engagement, and proven lifestyle interventions.”
Alyssa serves as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Clinic Director with ATI Physical Therapy, where she specializes in helping patients—particularly older adults—maintain strength, balance, and independence. Her expertise in fall prevention, mobility training, and functional movement directly supports AlestaCare’s focus on keeping seniors safe and active in their own homes.
“Physical activity isn’t just about preventing falls, though that’s critical,” said Alyssa. “Research shows that regular movement, even gentle activity adapted to someone’s abilities, can reduce the risk of cognitive decline. With the curriculum we have developed for AlestaCare’s clients, we’re teaching our caregivers to recognize opportunities for safe, appropriate movement and mental stimulation throughout the day, tailored to each client’s abilities, needs, and goals. It’s not physical therapy; it’s empowering caregivers to support their clients’ overall wellness, including their brain health.”
Growing up playing competitive soccer and participating in downhill ski racing, Alyssa developed an early appreciation for how movement affects both physical and mental performance. That foundation, combined with her clinical training and years of patient care experience, shapes her practical approach to helping seniors stay active safely.
The curriculum and caregiver training aligns with AlestaCare’s approach to cognitive wellness support: physical activity, mental stimulation, social connection, and nutrition—all lifestyle factors that research suggests may lower Alzheimer’s risk.
“We’re not claiming to prevent dementia,” Poch emphasized. “But we are educating ourselves, our caregivers, and our families so that the hours we spend with clients actively support their wellbeing. Having Alyssa’s clinical oversight means our team is following protocols developed by someone who understands both the science and the practical realities of working with seniors.”
Alyssa holds a degree from High Point University and brings extensive experience in both hands-on patient care and clinic leadership. Originally from Massachusetts, she now lives in Charleston where she enjoys exploring the area with her golden retriever, River.
The addition of clinical advisory oversight represents AlestaCare’s continued investment in providing Charleston families with home care services that go beyond traditional companion care to actively support long-term wellness and independence.
